The Drum Circle @ Freedom Park is a drum and dance gathering at Freedom Park, Lagos. It’s a community jam session of drum and percussion enthusiasts. Rhythm knowledge, passion, energy, enthusiasm and native spirits will be on tap. The Drum Circle is open to anyone and everyone with an interest in drumming, dancing, rhythmic therapy or people who just want to observe and enjoy. It’s our very first Drum Circle of the year and will be an especially spirited one, so bring yourself and your kids and your relatives and your friends to this totally awesome family-friendly drum and dance showcase. The beats begin around 2 pm at the feet of the big old tree or somewhere even cooler. Just follow the sound of drums and you’ll find us. Come join us and have some fun. It’s open to all.

POLLY ALAKIJA PRESENTS: IKENGA – WATERSIDE SESSIONS
Ikenga: ‘The Waterside Session: ‘The confluence of African Rivers’, Featuring Guitar Music from Nigeria, Ghana, Congo and Cameroun, from 1930-1970. The Guitar was the arrowhead of the creation of a hybrid form of modern popular music in Africa, upon its introduction by Spanish and Portuguese Sailors, in the 19th century and latterly by European soldiers during the World War’s. It was adopted by African pioneers in the early 20th century and the fusion of Latin Guitar and African rhythms, gave rise to several genre notably Palmwine Guitar and Highlife in West Africa, Soukous and Afro-Rhumba in Central Africa and many more. This concert celebrates this glorious cultural heritage. In performance shall be the band Ikenga, which features veterans of some of Africa’s greatest bands.

Love Your Craft x Weaving Class
Come learn how to weave baskets with LoVe your crAft. Please note that spaces are limited . You will be provided with materials to make your own weaved good that you can take home. Additionally 25% of the money used for your class will be used to buy books written by African writers that will be donated to libraries in schools around Lagos. Donating these books is important to us because it will help create awareness amongst our youth that we as Africans are glorious. On this note we would like to leave you with this statement that coins the sentiments of why we think you should join us and LoVe your crAft. “We are African and we need to wear it for the glorious and unique brand that is!”

Tayo Olayode’s Permutations
Join SMO Contemporary Art and One of Nigeria’s most exciting experimental artists, Tayo Olayode, will open the Wheatbaker’s 2017 Art Program with, PERMUTATIONS, an exciting exhibition showcasing 38 impressive mixed media artworks. PERMUTATONS has been years in the making, as Olayode, an award winning artist who has taken part in group exhibitions in Ghana, Kenya, USA, Britain, Dubai, and Canada finally presents his first solo-exhibition in Nigeria.

Ayo Jaiyesimi’s ITAN (the Story) staged by THESPIAN Family Theatre & Productions is an intriguing award-winning epic play laced with both cultural and contemporary dance and music that will keep viewers at the ‘edge of their seats’! ITAN mirrors the impact of cross-generational conflicts prevalent in our modern day world through the battle for ‘Generational’ supremacy between a village elder, Pa Latinwo and his newly found ‘city gangster’ grandson, Dee-Kay. Both strongly rooted in their beliefs, refuse to shift their grounds. TIME (personified as Asiko) catches up with them and takes them on a journey into the past and future where they discover dark secrets that had been shrouded by the veil of time. Will Asiko’s mediation save the day or tear both worlds further apart?
