Literary Crossroads – Conversation with Africa Writers

The Reception of African Literatures in the German – Speaking World In the last five years almost 400 books of African fiction have been published in the German speaking countries of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Residency opportunities and an exchange of African writers with colleagues from overseas increased, the amount of festivals of African Cultures is on the rise. This enables a new chance for dialogue and for revisiting and reinvestigating the burdened relationship between Africa and Europe through the lens of the arts. We will talk about the important role that literature plays to enable a new and more informed perception of African contemporary societies in Europe today. Indra Wussow is the editor of “AfrikAWunderhorn”, a series of contemporary African fiction in German, literary translator, journalist and director of the Sylt Foundation. She lives in Indra Wussow Johannesburg/South Africa. The Literary Crossroads Series brings together African writers on the continent and from the Diaspora to discuss contemporary trends and themes in Literature.

Rele Arts Foundation – Young Contemporaries 2017 

The Rele Arts Foundation (RAF) is pleased to announce the sophomore edition of the Young Contemporaries. Young Contemporaries is an artistic initiative that identifies, promotes and, mentors young visual artists; giving them the tools to succeed critically and commercially in the global art marketplace. Five bright, and promising young artists working in diverse mediums with varying degrees of skills and techniques have been selected and highlighted as the one’s to watch out for in 2017. Themes in this year’s works include; feminism, cultural and self identity, racial boundaries, and duality of human nature. The resulting exhibition is an indication of a younger generation contributing their artistic voice to societal issues.

ITAN 

Ayo Jaiyesimi’s ITAN (the Story) staged by THESPIAN Family Theatre & Productions is an intriguing award-winning epic play laced with both cultural and contemporary dance and music that will keep viewers at the ‘edge of their seats’! ITAN mirrors the impact of cross-generational conflicts prevalent in our modern day world through the battle for ‘Generational’ supremacy between a village elder, Pa Latinwo and his newly found ‘city gangster’ grandson, Dee-Kay. Both strongly rooted in their beliefs, refuse to shift their grounds. TIME (personified as Asiko) catches up with them and takes them on a journey into the past and future where they discover dark secrets that had been shrouded by the veil of time. Will Asiko’s mediation save the day or tear both worlds further apart?

Fatima lives alone with her two daughters: Souad, 15, and Nesrine, 18, who begins medical studies. Fatima has a very poor command of French and it becomes a frustration in her everyday relationships with her daughters. In order to offer them the best possible future, Fatima works as a cleaning lady with shifted schedules. One day she falls down a staircase. During her sick leave, Fatima begins to write in Arabic what she had not been able to say in French to her daughters until then.
